General Tips for Playing

  1. Do not attack other players if you don't want to be killed and have your corpse looted. Rooms that are normally safe will not be safe if you attack other players by initiating the fight, or by using a a violent Force power or skill on them.
  2. You can change the display of your prompt line. Your prompt line is your vitals that you see right before where you type your commands. To see your choices of prompts, type DISPLAY. Type HELP DISPLAY for more information on those prompts. Type HELP PROMPT to see how you can customize your prompt.
  3. Some items in the galaxy are considered illegal. These items are called contraband and signal to law enforcement that you are bad news. In other words, if you wield or wear these items, you will be attacked by authority mobiles.
  4. When writing your character description, posts on the holonet, or mail please learn to use the /f command. Type /h when you're writing to see the list of commands and what they do for you. As this suggests, people may not read what you write if it does not look pleasant to read.
  5. Try not to bother the immortals. Use the holonet or MAIL them if the problem is not urgent. If it is, then a direct TELL will be fine.
  6. You can communicate with other people either publicly or privately. Use SAY for talking to the people in the room, TELL for talking to a specific person, BROADCAST for talking to everyone, or GSAY to talk to everyone in your group.
  7. Many skills belonging to certain classes can be used by all players. However, you will have a very low success rate using them. Currently, the skills available for all are HIDE, KICK, SNEAK, TRIP, and UNARM.
  8. Type RECALL to return to your hometown. This command is available only for those at or below level 5.
  9. To loot your corpse in a pile of corpses, type GET ALL FROM ALL. You can also use "GET ALL ALL" or "GET ALL ALL.CORPSE". To specify a specific corpse, use "GET ALL #.CORPSE" where # is the number count of your corpse starting from the top corpse.
  10. As your group size increases, experience bonuses increase. However, the bonus may be insignificant when you have too many group members.
  11. Use the WIMPY command to set a certain amount of hit points before you automatically attempt to flee from a fight. This will probably save your life many times.
  12. When exploring the worlds, it is a good idea to travel in groups. You may encounter unexpected problems that a group member may be able to solve, you'll have backup if you find yourself in a tough situation, and you'll have a better chance of survival.
  13. To see help for commands and general information, please use the HELP system. You may find what you are looking for by typing HELP . Examples: help look, help eat, help sit, help who, help equipment.
  14. Mobiles and NPCs may remember you if you fight with them. They are characters that are not controlled by players. If you hurt more than one of these mobiles, and you are then killed, some may continue to pursue and attack you.
  15. Immortals commend players who help new players, if you want to get in the immortals good book, help these new players.
  16. A few things are dependant on the time of day. A few shops, and the light of the day are a few examples.
  17. Roleplay is encouraged, but not forced. It's probably a good idea to roleplay if you are in a faction.
  18. Leaving a starting town at an early level is not such a good idea. Try to stay within your starting town until you are familiar enough with it.
  19. When leaving any town, remember to bring a recall (tightly bound) scroll with you, and some food and water.
  20. While hunger and thirst will not kill you in this game, your regeneration ability is highly decreased without food and water.
  21. Typing who -s will give you the who list in a short form. This will also show who is a new player, and who is not. Any name with an asterisk (*) by their name is a new player.
  22. Upon reaching the level of 15, you are able to request a title. This title can be your last name and/or a faction name. At level 25 you can request a pre-title, which will give you a title before your name (i.e. Mr, Mrs). There is a set list of pre-titles, so please don't whine if yours isn't on there.
  23. Immortals are often busy, if you don't get attention immediately then there are several options for you to take. If the situation is not urgent or if it requires quick notification, use the MAIL system. And, if all else fails, you can give them a TELL.
  24. BROADCAST is for telling the entire world something that is important, or for urgently selling something. Please do not use it to say something stupid, or you will be muted.
  25. The mastery of your skills and force powers depend solely on your intelligence. Only the rate at which your skills advance in mastery depends on wisdom. These two are often mistaken.
  26. At level 6, your stats may be viewed with a scroll of knowledge and lore.
  27. It is a good idea to vote everyday at http://www.dforces.org because it will bring in traffic, and further your chances for new zones, quests, and more immortals.
  28. The WIZLIST command will tell you what immortals are currently serving the DarkForces world. These Immortals should be respected at all times.
  29. Go to the dueling rooms if you want to fight a player without loss to experience and level. If you lose the duel in the dueling rooms, you will not lose equipment nor credit.
  30. Watch out for player killers that may attack you for no reason. Your credits will fall out and you may lose equipment to them. Use the bank to save your credits and containers to save your items. Containers with items inside cannot be looted in a PK.
  31. Higher charisma stats will lower your rent cost. You should also try to lower your rent cost by reducing the amount of equipment you rent with. You can do that by dropping them, giving them away, selling them, and various other ways.
  32. You can change your color settings for various displays, including normal text, room descriptions, exits, room names, damage text, tells, and more. See HELP COLORS for more detail.
  33. Ac-apply damage reduction can be raised by wearing more armor typed clothing. If you use the scroll of knowledge and lore on the item, it will tell you what type of item it is. Certain stores sell only armor typed clothing. You may purchase some in those stores.
  34. Turn off all your triggers before leaving your keyboard. A trigger is something your MUD client will send to the game when it reads certain text. We will punish anyone found using a trigger while not at the keyboard.
  35. Telnet users and the similar should learn to use \c at the end of their line if they do not want the game to process their command. This is useful for telnet users have trouble deleting lines.
  36. Log off at INNS instead of disconnecting your connection. Rent charge is increased if you are force rented. Force rent occurs after 20 minutes of idle time.
  37. Be extra careful with your passwords. Do not type it in front of people you know. We have had times when friends steal accounts from friends and we prefer that never happens.
  38. Your corpse will disappear forever if you do not loot it within a time frame. Use the command "get all from corpse" to loot it.
  39. If you don't know where your corpse is, there are a variety of ways to find it. You can use the skeletal arm in the Sith Shop in Mos Eisley to locate your corpse. You can use NECROSIS to take you to it. You can type QUITNOW and wait at the shuttle. Your corpse will be moved there after a few hours.
  40. Type "get all from 2.corpse" to loot the second corpse in the room.
  41. Report all unusual problems in the game, not just the ones you want fixed.
  42. Use the TRADE command if you want to safely trade item and credits.
  43. Immortals that appear to be online may not be there to listen to you.
  44. Type HELP DISPLAY and HELP PROMPT to choose or make a new prompt.
  45. Use the CONSIDER command to determine how hard a fight the character you want to kill may put up. Be warned that this is merely a rough estimate.
  46. Do not use the QUITNOW command unless you want to lose all equipment.
  47. Room and character descriptions may assist you in finding secrets.
  48. You do not have to delete your player to create a new one. It will be smart to keep your old character around as a backup until you are completely certain that it is of no use anymore.
  49. Some Force powers will not instantly work. Sometimes you must wait a short while before it does anything.
  50. Regeneration is at 15 second intervals. Please do not compare that to what you think you should gain in a minute.
  51. You can use shorthand commands. For example, use c as short for concentrate, n as short for north, e as short for east, and etc. For even better usage of shorthand commands, see HELP ALIASES.

  53. We have websites that may or may not be helpful to you. See HELP WEBSITES for a list of these websites.
  54. Hacking is not possible on Dark Forces RPG. There is only the possibility of abusing a defect. Abuse will be harshly punished. So, please report any glitches and not take advantage of them.
